How to Lower Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a very serious condition that is critical to address and lower as soon as possible. Elevated blood pressure levels (also called hypertension) can cause damage to your cardiovascular system by choking the ability of your arteries to carry blood from your heart to the rest of your body. It is just like putting a slight crimp in a hose that builds up pressure. The bad news is that the damage is progressive. The longer you have high blood pressure, the more damage and “crimping” that occurs ultimately resulting in a serious cardiac event.

The average blood pressure measurement is 120 over 80. The first number is known as the systolic blood pressure and the second number is the diastolic pressure. You can measure blood pressure by putting a cuff around your arm, inflating it, and then listening for the flow of blood. This is usually done by a health care professional, but there are automatic blood pressure machines that can do it for you. Individuals with high blood pressure have a higher risk of stroke, kidney failure, heart disease, and even heart attack. Due to this, even healthy, young people should have there blood pressure checked at least every 2 years.

You can treat hypertension by making changes to your lifestyle that will help lower your blood pressure. Sometimes it is necessary to supplement these changes with a medication such as a diuretic. Some changes that you can make is to stop smoking cigarettes or use any tobacco product, lose weight, exercise regularly, eat healthy – reduce fat intake, limit sodium – alcohol – caffeine intake, and practice relaxation techniques. You should also keep in constant contact with your doctor and stay the course with the plan that they give you.
