Teeth whitening have come a long way. In the past, the procedure entailed a visit to the dentist’s clinic. Nowadays, it can be as simple as purchasing a teeth whitening kit from the drugstore. Teeth whitening at home are safe. However, misuse or abuse of it can lead to problems we’d rather do without. That is not to say that these teeth whiteners have no side effects. They have, but by following label instructions properly, you can be assured that you can keep these side effects to a minimum.
The common side effects of teeth whitening are soreness of the gums and teeth. If your mouth is particularly sensitive to the whitening product used, it can hurt particularly if you have sensitive teeth. Because teeth whitening chemicals remove stains, they can erode the tooth enamel which leads to sensitivity. Extremely hot and cold beverages can further sensitize the teeth and cause pain and discomfort on your part.
Some teeth whitening kits pose serious risks to your health. An ill fitting tray can spill some chemicals, thus burning your mouth. Swallowing the chemicals may precipitate an upset stomach, nausea, dizziness and vomiting. A recent study has linked hydrogen peroxide, the chemical in teeth whitening to oral cancer. However, more studies are needed to establish it as fact.
Aside from having health related side effects; at home kits may result to uneven whiteness. We all want whiter teeth but uneven whiteness is a problem we’d rather not have. Uneven whiteness results from the chemical seeping through a cavity or crack, causing it to overly whiten the tooth. An obsession with whitening may make some people use teeth whiteners quite often. People who are so conscious of their physical appearance are prone to develop this. Because of the chemicals used, teeth whiteners should be done every four to six months.
Teeth whitening can dramatically improve one’s appearance. It can take off years from your face and make you face the world with more confidence. Misusing it though, can result to side effects which are detrimental to health. To ensure that you get the best results possible, carefully follow the instructions included in the package.
